I have spent the last 25 years in publishing at two companies – United Newspapers’ Extel (financial) and Informa (healthcare).
Four years writing about French and German publicly-listed shares and bonds at Extel qualified me to join informa’s (formerly PJB’s) crop protection newsletter Agrow as a writer (latterly assistant editor) of European and company news. In January 1995, I became editor of the group’s animal health newsletter Animal Pharm, focusing on EU regulatory news, the German market and CEO interviews. After an 18-month spell heading the group’s newly-acquired brewing magazine, Brewers’ Guardian, I joined the world’s leading healthcare products and business newsletter, Clinica, as editor. The staff number was larger but there was still a writing remit for the editor, as has always been the case in the 29 years since Clinica was launched under inaugural editor Ian Broadhurst. Peter Charlish (now a principal analyst at informa), David Harnden, Jeanette Marchant, Phil Greenfield and Maureen Kenny (now editor of informa’s RAJ), among others, have all held the role.
After nigh-on nine years in that role, and thereby becoming the longest-serving editor, I changed tack on April 2 2009 to become one of informa’s trio of analysts, joining Ian Schofield and Peter (above). These are “hand-off” editing roles that let the analysts write, talk - and connect - more with readers on healthcare economy, commercial, trade, regulatory and science issues that affect them directly. The move chimes in with informa’s interactive website relaunch plans. An exciting departure for informa, and an exciting time for Tina Tan, my successor at Clinica.
Healthcare is a full-time job, and writing about it seems hardly less so. Any free time not spent at home with the family in north Surrey might be spent on the guitar, keeping fit or doing bit of travelling.
